Senators Goalie Situation Starting to Shake Out

Senators Goalie Situation Starting to Shake Out

Andrew Hammond put the Ottawa Senators into a playoff spot and an awkward position simultaneously. When the goalie was in the midst of a historic run, Hammond was a no brainer to start. He’s cooled off recently though and has looked human, presumably opening the door for Craig Andersen to reassert himself as the top guy in Ottawa.

As the 2014-15 season comes to a close, it looks like the Senators are starting to move in that direction. Hammond is a fantastic story, but wasn’t considered an NHL-caliber goalie until mid-February. Before his (ridiculous) 14-0-1 run, the 27-year-old had been struggling to stop pucks in the AHL. Now suddenly he’s going to lead a team in the playoffs?

Ottawa head coach Dave Cameron has indicated before that he’d prefer to have Andersen in goal for big games. That’s how things are playing out today, as Hammond will backup Andersen against the Florida Panthers.

The Senators need a win against Florida, and badly. They are one point behind the Boston Bruins for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, but they have a game-in-hand. Ottawa’s postseason chances would drop almost 12% with a loss to the Panthers.

It’s time to see if Andersen can finish what Hammond started.
