Marek Zidlicky has been showing a bit of a tenacious side for the Detroit Red Wings lately. On Sunday afternoon he hip checked Washington Capitals forwards Tom Wilson, a play for which he was penalized for clipping. Yes, clipping.

Whether you like this hit or hate it probably depends on who you were rooting for in this contest. It’s important to remember that Zidlicky’s check was in response to an earlier exchange with the brash Capitals forward.
With Washington up 2-0 towards the middle of the second frame, a Capitals player dumped the puck deep into the Detroit zone to make a line change. One forchecker was immediately on Zidlicky, forcing him to turn towards an oncoming Wilson.
Not an awful hit by the 21-year-old sophomore, but the forward has developed a reputation for being a guy that runs around and hits anything that moves. That’s a fine way to play the game, but occasionally you’re going to irritate veterans that have nearly 800 games on NHL experience.
Zidlicky went to the well here and gave Wilson a little of his own medicine. Thankfully, no one was hurt on either play. Wilson’s hit was a little high and Zidlicky’s was a touch low, though hip checks are tough to throw perfectly given the speed of the game “these days.”
