DSTG Ep 21: Allegedly, the Connecticut Whale

On this week’s episode of Don’t Snow the Goalie Kate Cimini, Kate Reeher and Hannah Bevis sit down and talk about a wild week of happenings in the NWHL, from the All-Star Game to the unexpected trade between the Connecticut Whale and the New York Riveters this week to the report that Cimini broke Friday about the resignation of the Whale’s head coach and the events leading up to that situation.

We started off with the All-Star Game, which Bevis and Cimini were both in attendance for, discussing the skills competition before moving on to how the event was run, which, from a media perspective, was not well-orchestrated, but the follow-up by the league helped ameliorate the bigger of the issues.

Next, we focused on the Whale’s head coach situation. Thursday, Cimini reported that Jake Mastel had resigned as the Whale’s head coach; Friday morning she came out with another article that looked a little more into how and why the resignation took place. We discussed how this looked for the league, what it may mean for the Whale moving forward and also mentioned the Whale’s new coach, Heather Linstad,

Please note that there is a discussion of Linstad’s resignation and the allegations surrounding the lawsuit against the school, where it is alleged that Linstad dismissed a player from the team after an alleged rape.

We next talked about the recent trade between the Whale and the Riveters that swapped Shenae Lundberg and Chelsea Laden. Did they do it for salary? Did someone ask for a trade? Did teams need a new media personality? We discuss what may have been the reason behind the trade and also speculate which one of Lundberg’s Riveters housemates is going to start finding Whale stickers around the house first.

From there, we move on to the mailbag, which covered everything from parity in the NWHL this week to more questions about the Connecticut Whale and what the events of the past week might mean for them moving forward.
