One by one the teams that made the post season are being eliminated and having their breakup days. The day when team comes in for their final interviews with the press and clean out their locker and equipment. Many return the next season, some retire, and others are traded. This is also when the real injury reports come out and the New York Rangers are no exception.
Being a late “healthy” scratch as the regular season came to an end saw Dan Girardi miss the end of the playoff push and yet he still played in two post season games.
In his two playoff games in Round One he had an assist and ended up being a negative-2 for plus/minus.
Girardi, 31, had donned an “A” for the Rangers for the past five season. The defenseman has seen mixed reviews from fans for his contract and cap hit, along with some production loss; however, this season he still had two goals and 15 assists for 17 points and was a plus-18 in his 74 regular season appearances patrolling the Rangers blue line.
Concussions are a tricky thing in that there is no put a cast on it and be back n 4-6 weeks. Some players take huge hits and never miss a game. Some players like Detroit Johan Fanzen has been missing from the line up so long many forget he is still on the roster. Chris Pronger is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, though is currently still an “active” player with his LTIR contract being traded to the Arizona Coyotes to get it off the books in Philadelphia.
If Girardi was cleared to play and then had symptoms come back it could spell a long road to recovery for the defenseman.
