NWHL makes #BestKessel shirts available

Apr. 09, 2013 - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - BRIANNA DECKER, left, and AMANDA KESSEL celebrate as USA wins gold at the IIHF Women's World Championship, defeating Canada 3-2

The NWHL, in a quick, savvy bit of marketing, has created a limited-edition shirt in a hat tip to Amanda Kessel’s online nickname, “Best Kessel.”

The NWHL will certainly find buyers lined up around the block to purchase this shirsey, the lettering of which is reminiscent of the New York Rangers style of jerseys.

“Best Kessel,” which is written across the back where a player’s last name would typically go, references a video clip in which Kessel’s older brother, Phil Kessel, currently a winger for the Pittsburgh Penguins, tells a reporter that his sister is the best hockey player in the family.

It may have been an attempt to get a reporter’s goat but many have taken him at his word. Phil Kessel started a trend that has helped pump up his sister’s career and will garner new fans for the NWHL as well.

The NWHL’s description reads:

We know there are some other Kessels out there playing hockey, but #BestKessel is pumped & looking forward to get started on the season. She will be working hard this summer to get ready to #ReptheRivs, and we want our fans to be able to welcome her to the league and show ALL hockey fans who the Best Kessel is!
