The Minnesota Wild will take on the Chicago Blackhawks outdoors one week from today at the University of Minnesota. It’s the first of two games in the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series schedule, with the second game taking place at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 27.
Wild forward Zach Parise, a Minnesota native, is excited about the ability to play an outdoor game so close to home.
“The idea of playing in one is pretty special, and for us to get to do it at home as opposed to on the road, and in a place where hockey is such a part of the culture, for the families, for everyone, I think the whole weekend is going to be a fun time for a lot of people,” Parise told NHL.com. “There’s a handful of guys in the same situation as me that grew up in Minnesota, grew up on the outdoor rinks, at the parks. Now it all just comes full circle now that we’re playing outdoors in the NHL in Minnesota. It’s great.”
Parise was a fan of the Minnesota North Stars growing up. If there is something missing from next weekend’s festivities, a slate that includes honoring the North Stars via a joint Wild-North Stars alumni team for the alumni game, it’s the 31-year-old’s ability to put on the jersey of his favorite team.
“I wish we were going to be wearing the North Stars jerseys or colors [in the Stadium Series game],” Parise said. “That would have been awesome.”
