Meg Hewings, general manager to Les Canadiennes de Montreal of the CWHL, announced a series of preseason games Tuesday morning, the first of which is to come this Friday, Sept. 9. against the McGill Martlets at the McConnell Arena. The match will allow newcomers to the team to showcase their skills and earn a spot on the final roster for the 2016-17 season.
Montreal also announced that it had cut goaltender Taylor Hough from the final roster Tuesday. Hough is a 2016 McGill graduate who stood in net for the Martlets for four years. As a senior, Hough played 1567:04 minutes in net and posted a .916 save percentage, allowing an average of 19.5 goals per game. Her departure leaves room for Amanda Makela, Catherine Herron and Jenny Lavigne to earn top spots alongside Charline Labonté, a gold medal-winning Olympian for Team Canada.
Montreal’s roster, as it stands, boasts 23 skaters and four netminders; CWHL teams can roster up to 25 players. As such, Les Canadiennes will likely look to cut loose another skater and a goaltender as the team cannot offer four goalies a worthwhile amount of time in net.
Les Canadiennes held the top regular season record for the 2015-2016 season, going 20-3-1 over the course of 24 games and scoring 114 goals-for to the 36 goals-against the team’s opponents managed. Montreal lost the Clarkson Cup in the Final to the Calgary Inferno; the team looks to change that standing next season.
