With the World Cup of Hockey getting underway and training camps right around the corner, ‘tis the season for NHL Insiders like Pierre LeBrun to exit hibernation and return to the media circuit.
Lebrun has been active this week and made a Friday morning appearance on Vancouver’s TSN 1040, touching briefly on the NHL trade market.
Is it basically on hold until after training camp?
“It’s a funny year because of the fact that the cap barely went up and a lot of teams are really hamstrung,” pointed out LeBrun. “Just look at the fact that Kris Russell is still out there on the market as a UFA. Pretty good player. But I think they’re waiting for a few teams that have interest in him to trade cap space, right.
“And a lot of teams are hamstrung. And I know that a lot of the teams that are making calls right now is about that – ‘Can I unload some cap space.’ Well, not a lot of teams want cap space.”
Teams taking on cap space. Hmm. One in particular comes to mind.
“And there’s only so many times Arizona can take dead money,” LeBrun kidded. “Which they’ve done about 18 times in the last year.
“So I don’t sense that (the trade market) is that heated right now. I think we need the year to start and see how things shake out first.”
