Ryan Murphy will not be putting away his skates for the summer just yet, as the Carolina Hurricanes assigned the defenseman to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League on Monday.
Murphy will join Charlotte for its final two regular-season games on Thursday and Friday against the Lake Erie Monsters.
The 23-year-old blue-liner appeared in 35 games for the Hurricanes this season, recording 10 assists and a minus-1 rating. He also registered seven goals and 22 points in 30 contests with the Checkers.
Selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft, Murphy made his NHL debut in 2012-13, skating in four games for Carolina. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder has collected six goals and 29 assists in 124 career contests with the Hurricanes.
A native of Aurora, Ontario, Murphy represented Canada at both the 2011 IIHF Under-18 Championship and 2013 World Junior Championship.
