Friedman on Flames and Backes, Lucic, Bickell

Elliotte Friedman was on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 on Monday morning.

On who with size is out there and potentially available that the Flames could target:

“There’s a few players. There’s St. Louis. I think that they’ve got potentially a guy like David Backes available. I think the toughest thing when it comes to that is are there going to be a lot of teams in the West who are going to be willing to deal with each other. But you know Backes is a potential guy. I’ve talked about him on your show before.

“I think the most interesting one out there is Lucic because I do believe Boston is at least considering the possibility that they would do it. He’s a guy who is an unrestricted free agent after next year. He didn’t have a great year. His number is already 6. What’s it going to be.

“I think in a lot of ways, he is the prototypical Bruin and they have talked about how they want to get back to being the Bruins, but I think there’s also concern about the mileage on his body and the fact he didn’t have a great year.

“But I do think potentially he’s out there. To me, the biggest problem with Lucic is and Brad Treliving talked about it last week at his media conference – is you know what? He’s got to sign Giordano. I heard you talking about him. He’s got to sign Monahan. He’s got to sign Gaudreau. I don’t think he’s going to be able to get Lucic, if he wants to keep him, and do all of that. So there’s an issue right there.

“He’s done deals with Chicago before. Bryan Bickell is definitely going to be available. I’m curious to see if Calgary would have any interest in potentially a player like that. He only has a couple of years left on his contract. He’s underachieved. He’s not been what Chicago wanted since he got signed to the extension. But he’s a big body… He’s definitely available. The question would be how interested are the Flames.”
