Elliotte Friedman was on Edmonton’s 630 CHED on Friday afternoon.
On if a minor move is needed to spark his team, and what Peter Chiarelli is thinking early on:
“Well, I think obviously he’d probably like to get some help on defense. I mean, the thing is though there are teams out there looking for defensemen. Boston’s looking for a defenseman. Carolina’s looking for a defenseman. There’s not much available out there right now.
“And the other thing is too, it’s early. So teams kind of have to look and see, ‘Okay, I want to look at my group.’
“I was just talking to one GM this afternoon. I said, ‘Is anything going on out there?’ He said, ‘No, not really.’
“So I’m not really sure how many moves are out there to make. So I think that’s part of the problem. Philly obviously has extra defensemen, but what does Ron Hextall want? That’s always a question. I just don’t know. When you’re looking at teams like Boston and Carolina that have obvious defensemen moves, and they’re not making them, that says to me it’s not an easy market to make trades in right now.”
On if there’s anything new to report on Zdeno Chara:
“Not really. I just think it’s going to be very difficult for them to do that right now. I’m not sure he wants to do it. I know he loves being a Bruin. Secondly, there’s not a lot of teams that can handle that. It’s a $6.9 million cap hit for two more years after this one. And aside from the Oilers, I don’t know many teams that are out there that can pull that off. Columbus, I think, is a team I think would be a perfect fit for him and I don’t think they can do it.
“The other thing too, is does Chara want to go? I’m not convinced he does and he holds the cards here because he’s got the no-move.”
On Loui Eriksson as another name to watch out of Boston:
“Well, I know they tried to trade him last year. It just hasn’t been a fit. It just hasn’t worked out well there for him. He’s up at the end of this season. I’ve got to think at some point he’s getting traded this year.”
