Jonathan Drouin hasn’t had the rookie season most thought he would. The highly touted offensive force has been held mostly at bay during his first season in the NHL. Despite that, everyone knows that the 20-year-old has tremendous potential and is one of the most creative young players in the game.

Drouin showed a flash of his potential on Monday night against the Montreal Canadiens. Defenseman Anton Stralman found the freshman skating behind the Habs’ defense, giving him a breakaway from the blue line in. Drouin procdeded to pull a slick deke on Carey Price before depositing his third goal of the season.

It’s weird that Drouin has only scored three times this year, but it’s clear that he has enough talent to eventually be more effective for the Lightning. A fact that hasn’t been lost on pundits and fans alike.

It’s worth noting that in this play, Drouin out-skates P.K. Subban well enough to create the separation needed for the deke. That’s not a knock on Subban. Instead, it’s a testament to just how fast 2013’s third overall pick is out on the ice. The goal seemed to give Drouin a jump, as he’s arguably playing his best game of the year.
